Something very Irish I’m learning this spring here.
This new word ‘fraughan‘ deserves a blog!
My friends told me about this fruit the first time when we crossed a whole foresty area in Brockah in Glendalough (end feb) – we didn’t see the fruit yet but Brid told me these were ‘fraughan’ plants -… then during our Spink walk on Easter Monday, they actually showed me the fruit. Tiny small, round thing, which were turning from green to orange color.
Then 2 weeks after that, we went to Djouce Mountain walk, where we’ve seen it again and they were really everywhere!!
This ‘fraughan’ – pronounced ‘frocken’ – is  ‘Bilberry’ (See Wikipedia) .
I know it in its French name ‘myrtille‘.  I really hope I will get a chance to collect them when they will be ripe, mid-end July.
I used to collect blackberry in Breitenbrunn, Austria. I love to collect the small wild fruit… it is like hunting treasure in the nature, isn’t it?

And the other plant my friends showed me is ‘Cowslip‘, which looks a bit like primrose but different, with a long stem.

J’observe tous les jours le printemps irlandais, qui a l’air de progresser, mais par moment il recule un peu, il se cache, il montre des couleurs magnifiques, il se dévoile petit à petit et il mûrit. Les oiseaux sont très actifs, ils chantent vraiment très fort, les bébés moutons grandissent à toute vitesse.

Et là, je me suis dit qu’il faut consacrer un billet à cette plante très spéciale, qu’il faut connaître si on habite dans ce coin!
Mes copines m’en ont parlé déjà pour la première fois fin février, lors de notre marche à la colline de Brockah à Glendalough. Brid me disait ‘Sachiko, il y a plein de fraughan dans ce coin et on trouvera des fruits plus tard dans l’année…’  Mais là, franchement j’ai rien vu!!
Ensuite, sur le trajet de Spinc, lundi de Pâques, on m’a montré ce que c’est. C’est là que j’ai vu ces petits fruits vraiment très mignons, qui commençaient à devenir oranges….  On m’a donné l’orthographe du mot ‘fraughan‘ (prononcé ‘froc-ken’).
Dernièrement le 5 mai, à la montagne de Djouce, il y en avait plein plein plein partout le long du chemin! Vraiment chouette!!  En regardant sur Wikipedia, je me rends compte que ‘fraughan’, c’est ‘bilberry’ … en français ‘myrtilles’!!! Myrtilles!!!  Mais c’est ce que j’ai mangé en France en tarte et en confiture!!  D’accord. J’espère vraiment que j’aurai l’occasion d’aller en ramasser cet été….  Alller cueillir ces petits fruits sauvages, c’est comme aller chercher des trésors dans la nature.

アイルランドの春　ゆっくりと、少しずつ、春らしくなっています。イースターの頃はすごく良い天気だったけれど、そのあとまた寒くなって、やっぱり朝晩は暖房が必要。東京の人たちが「今日は暑くなりそう」とか言ってるのを聞くと、やっぱりずいぶん違うなあ〜と感じます。今日５月１５日も朝晩は暖炉をつけてましたものね。
さて、このちっちゃな可愛い丸いつぶつぶは、アイルランドの「フロッケン」ちゃんです。はじめまして☆　どうぞよろしくね〜♪
実は、２月の終わり頃にグレンダロッホのいつもと違うコースを歩きに行ったときに、「このへんは　夏になると＃＄＆がいっぱいとれるのよね〜」と友だちが教えてくれたんだけど・・・　「なに？　＄％＆？？？」　聴き取れないし、そこらを見ても、どれがその植物なんだか、いまいちわからなかったのです。
それから、このあいだイースターの月曜日（４月２１日）に「とんがり山」に遠足に行ったとき、「サチコ、これがフロッケンの実よ」　と教えてもらいました。道沿いの灌木に小さな実がいっぱいついていたので、はじめて「なるほど〜これか！」と認識できたというわけ。ちょっとオレンジがかった色で、あちこちにありました。帰りにお茶したときに、紙に　fraughan　と書いてもらいました。（これ、「フロッケン」　と読むのです、アイルランドのことばって　スペルと発音がかけ離れてるように感じます。）
そして、このあいだの５月５日にジャウス山へ行ったとき、下りの道の両側が「フロッケン」の原だったのです！！　もう、くっきりと赤くて、あっちもこっちもいっぱい！！　夏になって、ちょうどよく熟したころに、摘みに来られたらいいけどなあ〜♪　・・・　家に帰ってから　いろいろ調べてみたら、昔はアイルランドでは「フロッケンを摘みに行きましょ」っていうのは「デートに行きましょうよ」というわけで、ちょっと人里離れたところをふたりきり、和気藹々と集めに行って、気が合えばケーキを焼いてあげたりジャムをあげたんですって。ロマンチックだなあ。なんでも７月の終わり頃が収穫時期のようです。ふむふむ。
そして、なんと！「フロッケン」（ビルベリー） はフランス語で言うところの「ミルティーユ」なのだった！！！　ミルティーユのジャムとかタルトとか、フランスで食べたことがあるぞう！！　とっても美味しいミルティーユ。地元にいっぱい生えてるとわかって、うれしくなりました。(Wikipediaのビルベリーはこちら)

オーストリアのBB村では、ブラックベリー　いっしょうけんめい穫りに行って、ジャムも作ったのだった。こんどは「フロッケン」。夏に穫りに行けるでしょうか？？？？

もうひとつ、このあいだ教えてもらった植物もついでに載せておきますね。「牛滑り」の花。Cowslipですって。フランス語では　coucou　と言う地方もあるみたい。日本語ではキバナノクリンザクラ。長い茎が伸びていて、その先に、こんな鮮やかな色の花がついています。
