Unwieldy. For a salt and pepper shaker this Saliera is highly imprctical. But it’s perfect to explain the whole world. It features an allegorical depiction of the planet Earth. Neptune, the god of the ocean, faces Tellus, the goddess of the earth. They represent salt and pepper, water and land, man and woman. Their legs are tenderly intertwined. One is flexed to symbolize the maintains, the other extended to represent the flat plains. The base on which they sit features the four times of the day and the four seasons. So even without pepper and salt you won’t be bored in the Kunstkamer Wien.

（つづき）Kunstkammer Wienの名品のなかで特に印象深かったもの。優しいお顔のマドンナ　そしてルネッサンスの名品　チェッリーニの塩入れ。圧巻です。塩入れといっても、すごい重量感。一抱えもあります。海の神と土の女神が向かい合っている姿が、塩と胡椒、水と陸、男と女、山脈と平原、四季と一日の時の流れと・・・つまり世界全体を包みこむ壮大な意匠。
